Yr 9/10 Mrs Sharon Derrick
Welcome to our Year9/10 classroom!
We have a lovely chilled room with some sporty activities to engage our wonderful young people. At this stage of Key Stage 3 we are actively encouraging everyone to be as independent as possible through the day, whilst also growing their resilience and ability to have a go at challenges. Successes are celebrated and it is also a safe environment to sometimes get things wrong and make mistakes. We value team work, listening to each other respectfully and encouraging responsible and mature responses through the day. We also ensure we have a laugh through the day as happy pupils make the best learners!
February Highlights
February was busy enough in school with the highlight being the Bring and Buy Sale just before half term - many a bargain to be had and lots of money made for the school too! We also enjoyed making and eating heart shaped waffles to mark Valentine's Day. We are enjoying learning about the Wonderful World of Plants - why they are so important, how they grow, what the different parts are called and how pollination happens. We especially enjoyed the delicate challenge of dissecting a flower! Badminton has become a great favourite in PE with some great skills on show and we finished February with a 'shop survey' in Donaghadee in the Spring sunshine!
January Highlights
We celebrated three wonderful birthdays in January and spent the first couple of week settling in, talking through Christmas and also New Year - Resolutions and what 2025 might hold......exciting potential! We have enjoyed cooking eggs independently in many different ways in HE, spending time with Summer the therapy horse (miniature!) and also learning how to play golf in PE! In class we have started thinking though and writing persuasively (we are very good at this!) as well as extending our addition skills and learning to use the calculators. In Life skills we have been thinking and talking about 'Healthy Body, Healthy Mind', looking at the importance of sleep. how we use technology and what we eat.
December Highlights!
Well undoubtedly the biggest highlight through December was all the practising and preparation for the Secondary Pantomime - ALADDIN! It was an enormous success and everyone single of the pupils through the secondary school contributed whether on stage or behind the scenes! Personally I felt incredibly proud of each and every one of our young people - it was FAMTASTIC!
We had different audiences and speaking very honestly, many folk said it was better than the professional pantomimes! We also had party fun with games and food and generally enjoyed a bit of fun, chill time and crafting before the Christmas break.
November Highlights!
Since half term we have got stuck into our learning about the Circulation system, Our World and the countries that make it up, Tens and units and shapes as well as lots of great writing about Remembrance Day and our fabulous shopping trip to Bloomfield's to buy Christmas presents for our families! We also enjoyed a little treat at the wonderful Elim Cafe served by our very own Year 13's! We are enjoying practising for the pantomime and also decorating our door and room! Lastly we are enjoying having Mrs Gallagher teach us on a Thursday! Come on December - Bring on Christmas!
October Highlights
Well what have we been up to? Apart from getting into good routines and working hard in class we also have enjoyed many extra activities such as a visit from the PSNI about Road Safety, Some First Aid Paramedics and their ambulance car as well as a really lovely walk to Crommelin Wood. In class we have especially enjoyed Friday challenges with the Art Straws - some fantastic thinking here, as well as cooking, first aid, Road safety, learning about the importance of soap in our lives, thinking about shapes, tessellation and check out our fabulous self portraits! We have also enjoyed learning about Kenya from Mr Bett - Asante Sana! There has been a lot going on!
A wee Autumn walk to Crommelin Wood
